5 Signs Your Anxiety Is a Nervous System Response — Not a Faith Problem
Mar 24, 2026
You've prayed. You've claimed the promises. You've read Philippians 4:6 so many times it's dog-eared. And still — the tightness in your chest won't quit.
What if the problem isn't your faith? What if it's your nervous system?
For Christian women, anxiety is one of the most misunderstood struggles in the body — and in the church. As a Christian Nervous System Coach, I work with women who have tried everything spiritually and still feel stuck. For many of them, a missing piece is nervous system regulation. I'm Julie Rebboah, MS, creator of Biblical Breathwork™ — a technique that pairs evidence-based breathing with Scripture and worship to help Christian women find real, lasting peace.
Here are five signs your anxiety is a body response, not a spiritual failure.
A Quick Word About Your Nervous System
God designed your body with a built-in alarm system. When it senses danger, it triggers a fight-or-flight response— racing heart, shallow breath, racing thoughts. That's God's protection system, not a flaw. The problem is when this alarm gets stuck in the "on" position, firing even when you're safe. When that happens, trying harder to feel peace won't turn it off. It's a signal that your body needs body-based help.
Sign #1: You Feel Anxious Even When Nothing Is Wrong
Your think everything is okay. But your nervous system hasn't gotten the message. Your nervous system runs on felt safety — and if it learned that the world was unpredictable or unsafe, it keeps scanning for threat.
"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." — 1 Peter 5:7
Sign #2: You're Exhausted No Matter How Much You Rest
Survival mode is expensive. When your body runs the alarm too long, rest stops restoring you. God designed a built-in rest-and-restore mode. We just have to learn how to access it.
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." — Matthew 11:28
Sign #3: You're Always Waiting for the Other Shoe to Drop
That constant, low-level alertness — bracing even when life is good — is a body memory, not a trust issue. You can love God deeply and trust him, and your body can still be operating on high-alert mode.
Sign #4: You Have Physical Symptoms Without a Clear Cause
Tight shoulders. Heavy chest. A stomach that knots up before hard conversations. These are your nervous system's signals. Your body is not the enemy. It's asking for care and attention.
"Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you." — 1 Corinthians 6:19
Sign #5: "Just Pray More" Hasn't Been Enough
You are not failing at prayer. God's very first gift to humanity was the breath of life (Genesis 2:7). When fight-or-flight kicks in, the thinking part of your brain — the part that absorbs Scripture, reasons, and finds comfort in words — becomes much harder to reach. It's still there. But the alarm is too loud for it to come through clearly.
Breath turns the alarm volume down. That's the science. That's also God's design.
Biblical Breathwork™ meets your body where it is, so that God's Word can land in a place that feels safe enough to receive it.
What It Feels Like on the Other Side
This is what women experience with Biblical Breathwork™ — in their own words:
"My chest doesn't feel tight. I'm not waking up in panic at night." — Robin
"I laid down on my mat and woke up hours later. I hadn't slept like that in so long." — Brenda J.
"Instant calm. My whole body relaxed and my mind went clear." — Nicole
"My shoulders dropped. My chest loosened. I didn't even know I was holding that much." — Wanda
That is what a regulated nervous system feels like. That is available to you, too.
