Family Stress During the Holidays: How to Find Peace at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve

Christian Nervous System Coach, Julie Rebboah, is inviting people to her ABCs of Holiday Peace Workshop.

You already know how it will go. Patterns repeat themselves.

The relative who brings up politics, or the thing that happened years ago. The not-so-subtle jabs about your spouse, your parenting, or pretending the "incident" that happened last get-together never occurred at all. The quiet drive home, replaying every word you didn’t say and a few you wish you hadn’t.

And somehow, you’re the one everyone counts on to plan it, host it, cook it, and clean it up, while keeping the peace for everyone but yourself.

If your stomach drops just reading this, you’re not alone. And you don’t have to walk into another holiday season bracing for impact.

Why Family Stress During the Holidays Hits So Hard

Family gatherings pull us back into old roles fast. Within minutes of walking through the door, you can feel like the peacekeeper, the fixer, the one who keeps it all together, or the one who’s blamed for all the family problems.

While you may wish you could break out of your old roles, the fact you haven't isn’t a character flaw. It’s a nervous system on high alert, doing its job. When your body senses a threat, even a familiar one wearing a holiday sweater, it shifts into protection mode. Your heart races, your chest tightens, and the calm, wise words you planned disappear.

When you say too much, you get blamed or labeled as “the problem.” When you say nothing, people assume everything is okay and the same old patterns continue, all while your blood is boiling toward its tipping point.

Scripture tells us, “Do not be anxious about anything” (Philippians 4:6, NIV). Sometimes that's easier said than done, especially when you're sitting across the table from the person who knows exactly how to push your buttons. What helps is having a faith-based plan.

How to Deal With Difficult Family Members During the Holidays

As a childhood trauma survivor turned Christian Nervous System Coach, I lived through this every single holiday and family dinner, and I know I'm not the only one who has struggled with this delicate topic that needs handling with wisdom, care, and Scriptural truth.

That's why I created ABCs of Holiday Peace, a live virtual workshop for anyone navigating difficult family dynamics this season, from holiday family drama to toxic family members. It’s built on five steps that are easy to remember when emotions run high or you feel like shutting down:

  • A: Anchor. Calm your body before you walk in and in the moments that get hard, so you can respond instead of react.
  • B: Boundary. Set healthy boundaries with family before the holidays begin, deciding what matters most.
  • C: Communicate. Say what you need clearly and kindly, without over-explaining or apologizing.
  • D: Disengage. Step back from a conversation that’s going nowhere, with grace, without guilt, and without getting sucked into the downward spiral.
  • E: Entrust. Release what you can’t control and surrender it to God.

You’ll also learn the Hallelujah Breath Prayer, a simple Biblical Breathwork™ practice you can use at the table, in the kitchen, or in the car before you go inside. No one has to know you’re doing it.

How to Protect Your Peace at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve

Imagine walking into Thanksgiving with a plan. You notice the familiar tension rising, and instead of spiraling, you anchor. You hold the boundary you set. When the conversation turns, you know what to say, or when to excuse yourself.

Now imagine carrying that same calm into Christmas and ringing in the New Year with your peace still intact.

That’s what this workshop is for. We meet live on Thursday, November 12, at 4:00 pm PT , early enough to prepare before the first gathering. Can’t make it live? Every registrant receives the replay.

Want to go deeper? The VIP experience  adds a small group coaching and Q&A session on Friday, November 13, at 9:00 am PT , where we’ll dive deeper into the topics you need most. VIPs also receive Holiday Peace Script Cards : ready-to-use words for the moments that usually leave you either erupting or speechless. VIP seats are limited.

Your Most Peaceful Holiday Season Starts Now

You can’t choose your family, and you can’t control what they say or do. But you can choose how prepared you are when you walk through the door.

This year can be different!
